This 1960s property underwent a complete transformation, with the owners reimagining the front garden to reflect a modern, sustainable lifestyle. Their brief included parking for two electric vehicles, discreet yet functional bike and bin storage, and an attractive design that complemented the updated façade.

One of the most significant architectural changes was the removal of the original external staircase, which once led to what is now a right-hand window. This bold alteration enabled the creation of a new main entrance at street level, cleverly positioned where one of the original garage doors once stood. In the space formerly occupied by the staircase, a large bike storage area was introduced, featuring bespoke cedar wood panel doors. Adjacent to this, a dedicated bin storage zone was constructed to accommodate multiple bins. Due to the height of these storage units, a shallow planter was installed on the roof, just above eye level. This added a touch of green with shallow-rooted, drought-tolerant species including peonies, irises, ornamental grasses, agave, and euphorbias.

On the opposite side of the garden, the boundary wall was raised to address the significant height difference with the neighbouring plot. This provided an ideal spot to discreetly house an electric vehicle charger, keeping it out of sight from the street.

To overcome the heavily compacted clay soil, raised beds were constructed using Corten steel edging. These beds improved drainage and allowed for nutrient-rich planting soil. Sun-loving, contemporary plants were introduced along the sunlit border—Magnolia grandiflora for vertical structure, alongside palm yucca, Euphorbia wulfenii, and striking black Phormium for contrast and year-round interest.

The original concrete driveway was replaced with a resin-bound surface, which was also extended into the garage for visual continuity. This finish is not only modern but also permeable and SUDS-compliant, ensuring efficient rainwater drainage.
