The owners of this property have a young son who is very into football. They therefore wanted a large lawn for playing football. They also wanted to be able to put up a 10 meter marquee for parties.
Corten steel edging was placed at the side of the lawn for numerous evergreen plants. These included magnolia grandiflora, a Bay tree, rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, cordylines and flaxes. Highlights included alliums, iris, verbena bonariensis.
The garden has a large trellis structure for an older children’s relaxation/play zone . It is adaptable with monkey bars, basket swing chairs and hanging chair. It also has vines and white wisteria growing over it which will be more extensive when the children have outgrown it as a play area.
The upper garden level has numerous edible plants including fan plum, apple, pear and cherry trees. There is also blackcurrant and blueberry bushes, a fig tree, fennel, rhubarb, strawberries and mint The garden room is made of brickwork and a concrete floor as it has to retain high walls behind and to one side. Sliding wooden doors conceal extensive storage whilst large
bi fold glass doors mean the space can completely be opened up into the garden. The garden room can be used as a play area in poor weather with football table and air hockey, but is versatile in that it can also be used as an office room or hangout zone for teenagers!
