This garden had old railway sleepers retaining the soil and a rotten slippery decking floor, plus an outdoor toilet. We moved the retaining wall backwards and removed the old toilet. This gave a bigger space for a large dining table and chairs as the owners wanted to use a garden for entertaining that could spread out onto the lawn for larger parties. The floor was tiled to match the living room extension so there was continuity with the interior.
The natural slope of the lawn was kept to avoid too much soil disturbance and the larger mature plants retained. We added non-invasive bamboo into the new side planter. Trachycarpa palms, a fig tree and Phormiums to the existing side borders. To the new south facing planters we planted graceful white eremurus, dark Cannas, tulips, aliums, Cordyline and Yucca.
